Community Belly Dance, Second Sunday, July 2008

July 13, 2008: A full house again this month at the G Street Bar & Grill, leaving standing room only for the dancers who came in late. Somehow we managed to get everyone in for a performance!

We are always amazed at the wide variety of dance styles, costume, and unique interpretations that fit into the two short hours of Zarifa's Community Dance.

Opening this evening's show was Tasseled Camel, a troupe organized by Idena, followed by a veil dance by Raqs Aroosh. Idena and the two dancers in her troupe - twins - have only been practicing since February and are doing quite well. Robyn danced a solo to a Turkish Karsilama. Zarifa danced a different routine to a drum solo, looking great in her white costume. Musicians we only know as "Steve and Jim" sat in before the first break on the Oud and doumbek. Drummers Jess and Jon finished out the evening with live drumming for the dancers, hammering out 4/4 rhythms, chiftetelli, malfouf and ayoub.

Kajmir, Oneeda, and Deeta presented a wonderful veil dance; Marianna and Emily of Tribal Circus danced an awesome fusion of belly dance, ballet, and yoga movements. Zarifa's students and friends Alisha and Carrie Lynn put together their own routine with fan veils to the Beatles "Come Together", an impressive canvas of color and motion. Many of the troupe dancers managed to squeeze in their own solo dances. What a full evening, thank you for coming everyone!
