February 2008 Community Belly Dance

February 9, 2008 - STANDING ROOM ONLY! Every month Zarifa and her husband take the evening of their day off, pack up a stereo, P.A., and a table and head out to set up Zarifa's Community Belly Dance, a free event hosted by the G Street Bar and Grill. And every time, it's the same - we arrive early, never knowing if anyone's remembered or if they'll show, or what surprises the evening has in store for us . . .

But they always do, right on time, trickling in around 5 o'clock, sometimes in costume, sometimes not, some ready to dance, some just curious . . . and no one ever goes home disappointed. This month totally took us by surprise. Things have been slow in December and January, as they always are, but this month the house was literally packed! We got to see some new dancers, a few new first-time dances, Maia stunned us all with a dance on goblets, and Zarifa's husband stepped from behind the stereo to play a Saiidi-based drum solo taqsim for Zarifa's dance. (He's only been playing a month!)

But most of all, a big THANK YOU to Kate for taking some of the best video we've had of this event. Usually we are too busy queing up songs and running the Dance as smoothly as possible and rarely have time to hold the camera - Kate is not only a natural dancer, she rocks behind the camera! We will have some full length video in the private area of our message board.

NEXT MONTH: COMMUNITY DANCE FIRST ANNIVERSARY We can't believe we've been doing this for a year already! Zarifa has always got a few surprises up her sleeve, and next month's Community Belly Dance will be no different. We look forward to seeing you all, put your celebration clothes on and cook up something special!
